Pokémon TCG Pocket to Overhaul Trading System Soon
The developers of Pokémon TCG Pocket have finally unveiled significant enhancements to the game's much-criticized trading function, which has been a source of frustration since its launch. The proposed improvements are promising, but players will need to wait for their implementation.
In a detailed post on the Pokémon community forums, the developers outlined the upcoming changes:
Removal of Trade Tokens
Trade tokens will be completely phased out, eliminating the need to sacrifice cards to acquire trading currency. Instead, trading cards of three-diamond, four-diamond, and one-star rarity will now require shinedust. This currency is earned automatically when opening booster packs and obtaining duplicate cards already registered in your Card Dex. Shinedust, which is also used to obtain flair, will see an increase in the amount offered to accommodate its new role in trading. This adjustment should enable more frequent card trades than before. Existing trade tokens will be converted to shinedust upon removal from the game. The trading process for one-diamond and two-diamond rarity cards remains unchanged.
Additional Updates in Development
A new feature will allow players to share cards they're interested in trading through the in-game trading function. This is a significant upgrade, as the current trade token system has been widely criticized. To trade even a single ex Pokémon card, players must currently discard several other ex cards just to accumulate enough trade tokens, making the process extremely costly and discouraging.
The new system leverages shinedust, an existing in-game currency used for purchasing flairs—animations that enhance cards during matches. Players automatically earn shinedust from duplicate cards and can acquire more through events. Given that many players already have ample shinedust reserves, the developers plan to increase its availability to facilitate smoother trading experiences.
Implementing some cost to trading is crucial to prevent abuse, such as creating multiple accounts to amass and trade rare cards. The trade token system, however, imposed an excessively high barrier, deterring most players from engaging with it.
Another major change is the ability for players to specify the cards they're willing to trade, addressing the current system's lack of transparency. Currently, players can list cards for trade, but there's no way to communicate desired trades within the game, leading to guesswork and limited engagement with strangers. The new feature will enable clearer communication, fostering more active trading among the community.
The community has responded positively to these announcements, although there's a significant downside: players have already discarded numerous rare cards to gather trade tokens, and these losses are irreversible. While existing trade tokens will convert to shinedust, the cards are gone for good.
There's also the issue of timing—these changes won't be implemented until the fall of this year. In the interim, trading activity may stagnate as players avoid using the current, flawed system in anticipation of the new one. Several expansions might come and go before Pokémon TCG Pocket's trading system truly flourishes.
So, for now, hold onto your shinedust and look forward to a more user-friendly trading experience in the future.
