As a practical person when it comes to spending money, I typically stick to essentials and the occasional video game on sale. However, last year, I found myself drawn to something as seemingly frivolous as a LEGO set. Despite my childhood love for LEGO, I had grown out of the habit—largely due to the high costs associated with these kits, especially those linked to popular movie or video game franchises.

It took a while for me to justify the purchase of the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of last year for under $50. I finally decided my desk needed a new potted plant, and this set fit the bill perfectly.

My interest in this set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant. As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the ideal way to showcase my passion for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers beautiful flower sets that would enhance my desk, none capture the whimsical and slightly eerie charm of the Piranha Plant.

Having now built the set, I'm delighted to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, adding a playful touch to my workspace. The building process itself was enjoyable and engaging, taking just an afternoon but keeping me fully absorbed. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my positive experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

The LEGO market can be dauntingly expensive, with new adult-targeted sets often priced at $200 or more. It's crucial to find a balance between indulging in a beloved hobby and maintaining financial responsibility. The LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was within my comfort zone. The joy it brings me daily, both during the build and now as it sits on my desk, confirms that this was a worthwhile investment for me. While the happiness it provides might be worth more, $50 is my personal limit for such a purchase.
