Zach Cregger, director of the acclaimed horror film Barbarian and a member of The Whitest Kids You Know, is set to helm a Resident Evil reboot. A bidding war is underway among four studios, including Netflix and Warner Bros., for the distribution rights to Cregger's project, which he will both write and direct.

Cregger's 2022 film, Barbarian, garnered significant praise, establishing his talent in the horror genre. He's already completed his next film, Weapons, which reportedly has tested exceptionally well with audiences. [Read our Barbarian review here.]

This marks the second attempt at rebooting the Resident Evil franchise on the big screen. Paul W.S. Anderson's six-film series, starring Milla Jovovich, achieved global box office success, grossing over $1.2 billion worldwide, despite significant deviations from the source material. A more game-faithful reboot, Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, was released in 2021 but failed to capture the critical acclaim or box office success of the games.

Constantin Film will again produce this new reboot, partnering once more with PlayStation Productions. Established in 2019, PlayStation Productions aims to adapt various PlayStation game franchises into film and television, including Uncharted (starring Tom Holland), Gran Turismo, the The Last of Us TV series, and Twisted Metal.

Future PlayStation Productions projects include adaptations of Until Dawn, Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima, Gravity Rush, Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and an Uncharted sequel. A God of War TV show and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series are also in development.
