Ryan Reynolds has revealed he proposed an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney, though it remains uncertain whether it will ever be produced.

The Deadpool star discussed some of his non-Marvel ventures during an appearance on The Box Office Podcast. While he didn't disclose whether Disney accepted the pitch or if it would be a film or series, he did elaborate on his vision for such a project.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds said. “It doesn’t have to center on the major, A-list characters... the universe offers a broad range of characters to explore. I’m not talking about vulgarity with an R-rating. An R-rating can be a Trojan Horse for genuine emotion, and I’ve always wondered why studios are hesitant to take that kind of creative gamble.”

Reynolds has a strong track record with R-rated films. He played a key role in three of the five highest-grossing R-rated movies in history: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Last year's irreverent Marvel team-up, featuring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, still holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, earning over $1.3 billion (via Box Office Mojo).

Reynolds remarked, “I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit.“

It's unclear if this level of success would translate to an R-rated Star Wars movie or series, but Reynolds confirms the idea is on his mind. However, he isn't interested in an on-screen role for such a project.

“I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” Reynolds added. “I’d prefer to produce and write, or work behind the scenes. Franchises like this thrive on scarcity and surprise. While scarcity is harder to achieve with Star Wars due to Disney+, you can definitely still deliver surprises to the audience.”

Meanwhile, Reynolds is not finished with Marvel. Although he isn't convinced his Merc with a Mouth should join the Avengers, reports suggest he has reportedly been quietly advocating for a Deadpool and X-Men crossover film for some time.

As for Star Wars, fans may have to wait a long time to see an R-rated project materialize.
