Scarlett Johansson Doubts Black Widow Return: 'She's Dead'

Apr 14,25(8 months ago)

Scarlett Johansson, a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she appears uninterested in reprising the role in the near future. During an insightful interview with InStyle, Johansson discussed her future, mentioning her upcoming role in the highly anticipated film, Jurassic World Rebirth. Despite her significant contribution to the MCU, she made it clear that returning as Natasha Romanoff isn't on her agenda.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. *She's dead.* Okay?" Johansson emphasized, addressing fans' persistent hopes for her return. "We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Her character's definitive end came in Avengers: Endgame in 2019, where she sacrificed herself to save Jeremy Renner's character, Hawkeye. Although Johansson last played Black Widow in the 2021 standalone film, fans have continued to speculate about her possible return.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson noted about fans' refusal to accept Black Widow's death. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

The MCU has a history of reviving characters, fueling speculation around upcoming blockbusters like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. These films are not only pivotal for the MCU's storyline but are also rumored to feature numerous cameos. For instance, Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed to transition from Iron Man to portray Doctor Doom, a role not seen in live-action for over a decade. Rumors have also circulated about Chris Evans potentially returning as Captain America, though he has since denied these claims.

Additionally, Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has met her demise twice in the MCU, is rumored to appear in the upcoming Doomsday project. With so many familiar faces potentially making a comeback, fans' speculation about Black Widow's return is understandable, yet Johansson's stance remains clear.

Fans will have to wait until May 1, 2026, for Avengers: Doomsday and May 7, 2027, for Avengers: Secret Wars to see which characters, dead or alive, will return to the screen.
