Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

Are you excited about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Well, you can rest easy knowing that the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still hard at work on the project. And we've got some reassuring words from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to share with you.
"I am [excited] too," Tropper told Screen Rant, hinting at the progress of the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While the movie remains largely shrouded in mystery, one key detail we know is that it's set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed some light on the film's timeline during an interview with Deadline in February. "That's also in the future," she said of Levy's film. "It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same interview, Kennedy also confirmed that Levy's movie will follow 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Another exciting piece of news is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star in the film.
With Tropper's optimistic comments, it seems that things are finally moving forward for Levy's project. However, fans will need to exercise patience as the film is slated to arrive no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.
It's been a while since Disney released a Star Wars film—the last being the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the meantime, Disney has canceled several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie that was set for a late 2026 release was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with a recent THR report indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
And that's not all Disney has in store for Star Wars fans. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, won't be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a thrilling triple-episode launch.
