The blog post honored the game’s success—exceeding 7 million copies sold—while offering fans an early look at Hornet’s next journey. The 41-second trailer showcases the bug-tastic heroine braving towering waves as she embarks on a nautical quest across wild oceans.

Though details remain limited, Team Cherry promises a wealth of new content: “New areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in our nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year. We’ll keep further details under wraps for now, but expect more information shortly before Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow releases.”

While Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen confirmed earlier this month that Silksong would receive DLC, the exact release date is still unconfirmed.

If development follows the pace of Hollow Knight’s original free content drops, fans may see Sea of Sorrow arrive in early 2026—mirroring how the first game’s two major DLCs landed within its first year.

Hollow Knight Switch 2 Edition

Alongside the Silksong DLC announcement, Team Cherry revealed they’re developing an enhanced version of Hollow Knight for the Nintendo Switch 2. The studio confirmed the Switch 2 edition “includes all updates and improvements introduced in Silksong.”

This means higher frame rates, elevated resolutions, and improved visuals. Players who already own Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch will receive the Switch 2 edition at no extra cost when it launches in 2026.

Team Cherry will also roll out new features and bug fixes to all current versions of the original game. Many of these updates are already live on PC via Steam and GOG, featuring full support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios on Steam Deck and ultrawide monitors.

As Team Cherry accelerates development on Silksong’s first expansion, fans are eager to see Hornet’s story continue. Given Hollow Knight’s history of multiple DLCs, Sea of Sorrow may just be the first of many.
