While the developers did not explicitly name the sender of the cease-and-desist, it is widely speculated that Nintendo, the owner of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, is behind the legal action. The app featured unique sections for users to list their preferred character, or "main," along with notable achievements and Smash Bros.-themed prompts. For instance, one prompt read, "I'm looking for... Someone who can make it out of pools at a major." These elements were designed to connect users with their ideal "Smash Partner."

The cease-and-desist letter likely stems from concerns over intellectual property and copyright infringement. Additionally, the concept of a dating app centered around a game like Super Smash Bros. may have been a contributing factor to the legal action. As of now, there has been no further communication from the SmashTogether team regarding potential plans to pivot the app away from the Super Smash Bros. theme.
