Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds New Features and Mechanics Revealed

Largest Roster From The Series Ever

Sega and the Sonic Team are joining forces to bring you Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, potentially boasting the largest roster in the series' history. According to Thalia Piedra, Sega of America's Associate PR Manager, the game will feature "iconic characters from the Sonic and Sega universes." Although the reveal trailer focused solely on Sonic characters, the official website confirms a launch roster of 23 characters, with more to be added post-launch.

The trailer showcased an impressive lineup, including fan-favorites like Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and Amy. It also featured characters from Sonic Riders such as Jet, Wave, and Storm, as well as Zavok and Zazz from the Deadly Six. Team Dark's Shadow, Rouge, and E-123 Omega made an appearance, along with Dr. Eggman and his creations Egg Pawn and Metal Sonic. The Chaotix team, including Vector, Charmy, and Espio, joined the race, rounded out by Blaze, Silver, Cream, and Big.

Travel Rings Will Transport Characters To Different CrossWorlds

One of the standout features of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the introduction of Travel Rings, a new mechanic that will transport characters to different worlds in real-time during races. These CrossWorlds promise to dramatically change the racing experience by shifting players to new, thematic environments filled with surprises, such as large monsters, engaging obstacles, and stunning scenery.

The game will also feature dynamic tracks inspired by previous titles like Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. With each lap, the track will evolve, challenging players to adapt their strategies to conquer the race. At launch, players can expect 24 main tracks and 15 CrossWorlds to explore.

Customization, Extreme Gear, Gadgets, and More!

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is set to offer the most extensive vehicle customization options yet. A preview shared on Twitter (X) on February 17, 2025, showcased a range of customization options, including modifications to the vehicle's front and rear parts, wheels, and color schemes for the body, tires, cockpit, and overall glow.

Players will also have the opportunity to equip their characters with Gadgets, tailoring them to their preferred play style. With 23 different power-up items and 45 unique original vehicles, including the return of Extreme Gear from Sonic Riders, players can enjoy a boost-based racing style. Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka highlighted that this game represents "a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date."

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Closed Network Test Announced

Closed Network Test Registration Now Open

Get a sneak peek of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds by participating in the upcoming closed network test. Registration opened on February 12, 2025, and will close on February 19, 2025. The playtest will run from February 21, 2025, to February 24, 2025, and is exclusively available on the PlayStation 5.
