Rumors suggest Sony's potential return to the handheld gaming console market. Long-time gaming enthusiasts will recall the PlayStation Portable and Vita. While still in early development stages, a new portable console from Sony, designed to rival Nintendo's Switch, is reportedly under consideration, according to Bloomberg.

However, the report's sources are described as "familiar with the matter," indicating the project is in its infancy and could be scrapped. Sony's previous foray into the portable market, with the PS Vita, despite its popularity, ultimately failed to compete with the rise of smartphones.

The resurgence of handheld gaming, thanks to devices like the Steam Deck and the continued success of the Nintendo Switch, alongside advancements in mobile technology, might be persuading Sony that a dedicated portable gaming console could find a niche market. The increased fidelity and capabilities of modern mobile devices could actually bolster the case for a dedicated gaming console.
