Sony made waves at CES 2025 by revealing plans to adapt the hit game Helldivers 2 into a feature film, with PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures collaborating on the project.

Major Game-to-Film Adaptation Underway

PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash took the stage to announce: "We're thrilled to confirm development has begun on a cinematic adaptation of our wildly successful title Helldivers 2." While specific details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate spectacular interstellar warfare brought to life in theaters.

Developed by Arrowhead Studios, Helldivers 2 is a critically acclaimed squad-based shooter that pays homage to classic military sci-fi.

The game shattered PlayStation Studios' sales records, moving an impressive 12 million units within its first three months. Its player base experienced another surge following the Illuminate update, which reintroduced a fan-favorite enemy faction from the original game.

Horizon Zero Dawn Film Also in Development

In addition to the Helldivers 2 announcement, Sony confirmed a separate movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn is moving forward. PlayStation Studios will partner with Columbia Pictures, the studio behind 2022's successful Uncharted film.

Qizilbash offered initial insights about the project: "While we're in the early stages of developing the Horizon Zero Dawn film, we can assure fans this marks the first time this rich universe and its compelling characters will be translated to the big screen."
