The story begins with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for an impending hurricane. After a heated argument, Hazel storms out, only to witness their home being swept away by the flood. Driven by the need to find her missing mother, Hazel embarks on a quest that leads her into a fantastical realm rooted in Southern folklore.

As Hazel explores Prospero, she encounters fantastical phenomena, including Catfish, an enormous talking creature stranded in a tree due to the hurricane's aftermath. Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical powers to see and manipulate the threads that connect the fabric of fate.
