South Park Secures $1.5B Paramount+ Deal for New Seasons
Eric Cartman isn't going anywhere without a fight. In a major breakthrough, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are reportedly closing in on a landmark deal for the show's streaming rights, following intense negotiations spurred by the Paramount-Skydance merger.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Paramount secured the rights on July 21 to bring South Park to its Paramount+ catalog. While not yet finalized, the agreement—under which Parker and Stone’s Park County Productions will deliver 10 episodes annually—is valued at an astonishing $300 million per year and is widely expected to proceed.
The five-year deal is projected to generate over $1.5 billion for the streamer, cementing South Park as one of television's most valuable franchises. It’s easy to see why: since its explosive debut in 1999, the show has become a global phenomenon, spawning countless specials, a feature film, video games, merchandise, and more.
However, the show's future recently looked uncertain. After HBO Max's streaming rights expired in June, the series found itself in limbo. Parker and Stone expressed frustration not only with the ensuing battle over streaming rights, but also with how the Paramount-Skydance merger disrupted production. Since February 2023, the show has released only six episodes and three specials.
When Paramount postponed the Season 27 premiere from July 9 to July 23, the creators took to social media with a blunt statement: “In response to Comedy Central's announcement about the schedule change, Trey Parker and Matt Stone said: 'This merger is a s**tshow and it’s f**king up South Park.' We’re at the studio working on new episodes and hope fans get to see them, one way or another.”
Thankfully, it appears Parker and Stone are finally nearing a resolution—and some creative harmony—amid the signature chaos of South Park.
