Surprising Game System Beat PlayStation and Nintendo Switch on Amazon in 2024
Meta Quest 3S: Amazon's 2024 Best-Selling Console
The Meta Quest 3S achieved a remarkable feat in 2024, outperforming established gaming giants like Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch to become Amazon's top-selling console. This success, particularly given its October launch, signals a growing consumer interest in virtual reality (VR).
The Quest 3S's affordability and standalone functionality are key factors in its success. Unlike competitors requiring powerful PCs or consoles, the Quest 3S offers a readily accessible entry point into the VR world with untethered freedom of movement. While VR remains niche, the compelling price and game library propelled the Quest 3S to Amazon dominance.
Amazon's 2024 best-seller list further underscores this achievement. The Quest 3S secured the #1 video game console spot, and a respectable #11 overall in the video game category, surpassing even the PlayStation 5 Slim (#17) and Nintendo Switch (#53). Notably, Xbox consoles didn't feature in the top 80, although their peripherals did. Only a Nintendo microSDXC card and the PlayStation DualSense controller ranked higher. The absence of the PlayStation VR2 further highlights the Quest 3S's appeal.
Accessibility and Affordability Drive VR Adoption
The Quest 3S's advantage lies in its standalone nature, eliminating the need for external devices and offering untethered gameplay, unlike the tethered PlayStation VR. This ease of use, coupled with its lower price point compared to the Meta Quest 3, likely attracted a broader audience. The inclusion of the discontinued Meta Quest 2 (#27) on the list, while the original Meta Quest 3 was absent, suggests price sensitivity within the VR market.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 slated for a 2025 release, the future of Amazon's best-seller list remains uncertain. However, the 2024 results strongly suggest a gradual but significant rise in VR adoption.
