Independent Argentine studio Matajuegos has released its surreal documentary game Atuel on Android and PC via Steam. Following its initial launch on itch.io in September 2022, Atuel quickly gained recognition for its captivating documentary narrative, experimental gameplay, and stunning visuals.

The title has already earned several awards, such as the Innovation in Experience Design Award at IndieCade 2022. It has also been showcased at international festivals and art venues, including the Marché du Film in Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

What Is the Gameplay of Atuel Like?

Atuel delves into the unique bond between communities and the environment in western Argentina, particularly within the Cuyo desert region. The game interweaves real-life accounts with fluid, dream-inspired gameplay.

Players journey through expansive, surreal environments reflecting the actual geography of the Atuel River Valley and Cuyo desert. As part of the experience, you transform into different animals, natural elements, and even the flowing Atuel River.

During your exploration, you listen to historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents who share their perspectives on the region’s history, current state, and future. The storyline touches on the global climate crisis and our relationship with land and water. Watch the gameplay trailer below.

An interesting note: The Atuel River begins high in the Andes, flowing from the glacial Atuel Lake. As Mendoza's longest river, it carves through the scenic Atuel Canyon, a striking gorge located in the Valle Grande. This majestic ecosystem served as the inspiration behind the game.

Now Available on Multiple Platforms

Developed in collaboration with international filmmakers from The 12.01 Project, Atuel was envisioned by lead artist and developer Santiago Franzani as a dream-like journey rather than a traditional documentary.

Moving away from pure realism, the game provides a poetic and emotional space where storytelling happens through motion, form, and audio. Players can immerse themselves in a kaleidoscopic narrative that explores the delicate, intimate connections between humanity and our surroundings.
