Nintendo Switch 2 Projected to Dominate Next-Gen Console Sales

DFC Intelligence, a leading video game market research firm, forecasts the Nintendo Switch 2 to achieve phenomenal sales, surpassing all competitors even before its official release. Their 2024 Video Game Market Report and Forecast, released December 17th, projects sales of 15-17 million units in 2025 alone, escalating to over 80 million units by 2028. This positions Nintendo as the clear console market leader, leaving Microsoft and Sony trailing.

The Switch 2's projected success stems from its anticipated 2025 launch, providing a significant head start over rival consoles. This early market entry, coupled with currently limited competition, creates a favorable environment for substantial sales. DFC Intelligence even suggests Nintendo might face manufacturing challenges due to overwhelming demand.

While Sony and Microsoft are reportedly developing handheld consoles, these remain in early development stages, with potential release dates around 2028. This three-year gap (barring unexpected releases) solidifies the Switch 2's dominance. The report suggests only one of these post-Switch 2 consoles will achieve significant success, potentially a hypothetical "PS6," leveraging PlayStation's established player base and strong intellectual properties.

This positive outlook for Nintendo aligns with recent sales data. Circana (formerly NPD) reported that the original Nintendo Switch has surpassed the PlayStation 2 in lifetime US sales, reaching the second position in all-time US video game hardware sales, behind only the Nintendo DS.
