Thunderbolts* held impressively at the box office in its second weekend for an MCU film, surpassing $272.2 million in global earnings.

The Florence Pugh-led action feature earned an additional $33.1 million domestically and $34 million internationally, securing the top box office spot for the second consecutive week. This indicates a modest 44% drop from its debut weekend, outperforming the second-week declines of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (52%), Captain America: Brave New World (54%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (54%). To date, Thunderbolts* has grossed an estimated $128.5 million in North America and $143.7 million overseas.

Marvel intensified its promotional efforts for Thunderbolts* last week, formally rebranding the film as New Avengers. The studio even extended the fictional rivalry between Sam Wilson's Avengers and this new team into real-world marketing. Marvel is clearly banking on sustained interest in Thunderbolts* in the coming months, as it builds toward the pivotal Phase 6 launch with The Fantastic Four: First Steps this July.

As reported by Variety, Disney invested $180 million in production and an additional $100 million in marketing for Thunderbolts*. For the film to become profitable in theaters, it must maintain strong performance worldwide.

Last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger praised Thunderbolts*, describing it as "the premier example" of Marvel's renewed dedication to quality over quantity.

Thunderbolts* previously led the domestic box office with a $76 million opening, which was viewed as solid but not outstanding. This figure exceeded the openings of Eternals ($71 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75 million), both considered disappointments, though it fell short of most other MCU debut numbers.

Nevertheless, Thunderbolts* is resonating with viewers and critics. IGN's Thunderbolts* review awarded it a 7/10, stating: "Much like its pseudo-antagonist, Thunderbolts* embodies both shadow and light. Yet only one aspect truly shines—specifically, the exploration of the characters' most haunting memories."

Disney hopes positive audience reactions will help Thunderbolts* maintain stronger theater attendance than Captain America: Brave New World, which saw steep declines. Recent years have been challenging for Marvel releases, with few exceptions like the blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine.
