Tron: Ares: A Confusing Sequel Unveiled

Tron enthusiasts, gear up for a thrilling 2025! The iconic franchise is set to make a grand return to the big screen this October with the much-anticipated sequel, Tron: Ares. Starring Jared Leto as the titular character, Ares is a program embarking on a high-stakes, enigmatic mission in the real world.

But can we truly label Ares as a sequel? Visually, it's a clear descendant of 2010's Tron: Legacy, as evidenced by the newly released trailer. With Nine Inch Nails taking over from Daft Punk, the film retains its signature electronica-heavy score, a hallmark of the franchise. Yet, Ares seems to be veering away from a direct sequel path, leaning more towards a soft reboot. Notably absent are key characters from Legacy, with stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde not returning. Instead, Jeff Bridges, a veteran of the Tron saga, is confirmed to be part of the Ares cast. Let's delve deeper into how Legacy set the stage for a sequel and why Ares appears to be charting a different course.

Tron: Legacy primarily focuses on Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde's Quorra. Sam, the son of Jeff Bridges' character Kevin Flynn, the CEO of Encom, ventures into the digital realm called The Grid to rescue his father and thwart Kevin's creation, CLU, from invading the real world. During his journey, Sam encounters Quorra, an ISO, a digital lifeform that spontaneously emerged within The Grid, symbolizing life's persistence even in a simulated environment. The film concludes with Sam defeating CLU and bringing Quorra, now transformed into a flesh-and-blood being, back to the real world.

The ending of Legacy sets a clear trajectory for a sequel. Sam, poised to take over Encom, is ready to steer the company towards a more open-source future, with Quorra by his side as a testament to the digital realm's marvels. The home video release included a short film, "Tron: The Next Day," showing Sam's return to Encom to usher in a new era.

Despite this setup, neither Hedlund nor Wilde will reprise their roles in Tron: Ares, a surprising move given their central roles. Legacy earned $409.9 million worldwide against a $170 million budget, not quite the blockbuster Disney hoped for. This may have prompted Disney to pivot towards a more standalone narrative for Ares, akin to their strategies with other underperforming films like John Carter and The Lone Ranger.

However, Sam and Quorra are integral to the Tron narrative, and their absence leaves a significant gap. It raises questions about Sam's commitment to Encom and Quorra's adjustment to the real world. Ideally, Ares will at least acknowledge their importance, if not through surprise cameos.

PlayCillian Murphy’s Edward Dillinger, Jr. ---------------------------------------

The absence of Cillian Murphy, who played Edward Dillinger, Jr. in Legacy, is equally perplexing. Introduced as the head of Encom's software development and an adversary to Sam's open-source vision, Dillinger was poised for a more substantial role in future sequels, potentially as the human antagonist akin to his father in the original Tron. With hints of the Master Control Program (MCP) returning in the Ares trailer, marked by the red glow associated with MCP, Dillinger's absence is notable. Instead, Evan Peters will portray Julian Dillinger, suggesting the family's continued involvement, but it remains to be seen if Murphy will make a secret return.

Bruce Boxleitner’s Tron

Perhaps the most striking omission is Bruce Boxleitner, who portrayed both Alan Bradley and the titular Tron in the original film, and reprised Alan in Legacy. With Tron's fate left open-ended after Legacy, his absence from Ares raises questions about the film's connection to its predecessors. Could Tron be recast with a younger actor, perhaps Cameron Monaghan? Fans hope Ares will address Tron's redemption arc and include him in some form.

PlayWhy Is Jeff Bridges in Tron: Ares? ----------------------------------

The inclusion of Jeff Bridges in Tron: Ares is particularly intriguing given that his characters, Kevin Flynn and CLU, were killed off in Legacy. His voice in the trailer hints at a possible return, but whether as a resurrected Flynn, a surviving CLU, or a new digital form remains a mystery. This raises questions about Ares' mission and whether it aligns with Flynn, CLU, or the MCP's agenda. While Ares promises excitement, its divergence from Legacy's narrative leaves fans both eager and curious.

Despite these narrative shifts, the inclusion of Nine Inch Nails' score continues to uphold the franchise's musical legacy. As we await Tron: Ares, fans can also look forward to the series' return to gaming with Tron: Catalyst, a Metroid/Hades hybrid.
