If you are currently enjoying a peaceful journey through Hollow Knight: Silksong, be forewarned. Beyond the game's roster of incredibly challenging bosses that will send you retrieving your shade repeatedly, there's an early miniboss giving numerous players a serious headache.

Warning: Minor spoilers for an early-game miniboss in The Marrow follow. Stop reading if you wish to remain completely unspoiled about any adversaries.

This miniboss is considered so insignificant by the game that its name doesn't appear on-screen, making guides difficult to find when you're stuck. Named Skarrgard, this hefty red insect enemy wields a large bone as a weapon. You'll find him lurking in a cave on the eastern side of The Marrow, just above the prison.

Skarrgard appears deceptively simple at first, resembling a slightly stronger standard foe. However, he has truly frustrated many players. He employs three attacks: burrowing underground before striking, a leaping assault, and a wide swing of his bone club. His bone weapon has considerable reach, and the confining tunnel makes most of his moves extremely difficult, if not impossible, to jump over. Furthermore, his strikes inflict two full masks of damage instead of just one.

There are two approaches to defeating Skarrgard: the easy way and the hard way. The hard way involves persistence and practice. You can bait him further down the narrow passage to limit his jump attack, and by dashing past him when he submerges, you can maneuver him back and forth in the room's center, landing careful hits until he falls.

I recommend the easy way, which is to return later. You will eventually acquire a dash ability that makes avoiding his attacks significantly easier, and it seems this ability is intended for use against him. Even if the reward for an early victory is tempting, it might not be worth the struggle. Defeating him unlocks access to a new area, but if you're facing him prematurely, you likely have plenty of other content to explore that isn't blocked by a giant, bone-wielding bug.

Whichever path you choose, good luck. For many, Skarrgard proves considerably tougher than Silksong's early proper bosses, so don't be discouraged by repeated defeats before you finally triumph.
