SteamOS Not Aimed at Replacing Windows

In a detailed interview with the French site Frandroid on January 9, 2025, Pierre-Loup Griffais, a key developer behind SteamOS, emphasized that their goal is not to oust Windows. When asked directly if SteamOS was intended as a "Windows killer," Griffais responded thoughtfully, addressing past comments by Valve president Gabe Newell about Microsoft's Windows 8.

"I don't think our goal is to capture a certain market share or to push users away from Windows," Griffais explained. "If a user is having a good experience on Windows, that's fine with us. We're focused on creating a system with different goals and priorities. If SteamOS becomes a compelling alternative for typical desktop users, that's great because it offers more choice. But converting users who are already satisfied with Windows isn't our aim."

By integrating SteamOS into PCs and handheld devices, Valve aims to provide users with additional options, particularly those who prioritize gaming experiences.

Lenovo Unveils SteamOS-Powered Handheld Device

While Microsoft continues to dominate the PC operating system market with Windows 11, Lenovo made waves at CES 2025 by introducing the Lenovo Legion GO S, a new handheld device running on SteamOS. This move allows users to directly access Steam and its vast game library from the device.

This marks the first instance of SteamOS, originally developed for the Steam Deck, being used in a device other than Valve's own hardware. Although it's not yet a direct competitor to Windows in the broader digital market, Griffais hinted at future expansions, stating, "Our work is ongoing, and SteamOS will continue to expand over time."

As SteamOS gains compatibility with more devices, Microsoft may need to reassess its business strategies.

In response to the evolving handheld market, dominated by devices like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, Microsoft's VP of "Next Generation," Jason Ronald, shared plans to integrate "the best of Xbox and Windows" during the same event. Microsoft aims to place the "player and their library at the center of the experience," although specifics on how this will be achieved remain under wraps as their handheld device is still in development.
