Witcher 3's 2025 Update to Enable Console Mod Support

Aug 01,25(3 months ago)

The Witcher 3 will receive a final patch in 2025, introducing cross-platform mod support, allowing console players to access mods for the first time.

CD Projekt revealed the update during The Witcher 3’s 10th anniversary celebrations. The patch will bring cross-platform mod support to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S later this year. “Creating, sharing, and enjoying mods for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be simpler and more accessible than ever,” CD Projekt stated.

The cross-platform mod support will arrive via a game update later this year. Players will need a mod.io account linked to their CD Projekt Red account to access this feature. Existing modding platforms remain compatible, so mod.io isn’t mandatory for PC mod uploads or downloads. However, console players must use mod.io to access mods.

Notably, while Xbox Series X and S and PS5 players can enjoy mods through cross-platform support, mods must be created using tools like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt REDkit on PC.

This is a significant update for the decade-old game, which continues to attract a large player base, maintaining its popularity 10 years after release.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has now sold an impressive 60 million copies. This figure includes the base game and GOTY edition, excluding standalone expansions. It’s nearing the latest sales numbers for Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Bethesda’s Todd Howard reported Skyrim’s sales exceeded 60 million copies, potentially tying The Witcher 3 as the best-selling RPG of all time.

Adam Badowski, CD Projekt’s joint CEO, commented on The Witcher 3’s sales milestone:

The third chapter of Geralt’s journey is a landmark in our history. The game garnered numerous awards and cemented our studio’s reputation, but more crucially, it delivered countless hours of adventure and emotion to millions of players worldwide. I’m thrilled to share that The Witcher 3 has sold over 60 million copies since launch, ranking among the best-selling video games ever, and inspiring us to push forward with the next trilogy in this universe.

This alludes to The Witcher 4, now in full production. Of CD Projekt’s 730 developers, 422 are working on the sequel, expected no earlier than 2027.
