'We Have Not Modified It' — The Witcher 4 Director Responds to Speculation CD Projekt Changed Ciri's Face
Following the release of a behind-the-scenes look at *The Witcher 4’s* cinematic reveal trailer, some fans noticed what appeared to be differences in Ciri’s facial appearance in certain short clips (at the 2:11 and 5:47 marks) compared to the trailer itself. These clips showed closer views of Ciri’s in-game model. While some praised the new look, others echoed previous concerns about her appearance in the reveal trailer. This led to speculation that CD Projekt Red had altered Ciri’s face after a perceived negative reaction.

However, *The Witcher 4* game director Sebastian Kalemba clarified on social media that Ciri’s in-game model remained unchanged. He explained that the clips showed “raw footage” – a work-in-progress snapshot taken before the application of cinematic lighting, animation, and camera effects used in the reveal trailer. This variation, he stated, is a normal part of game development, and a character’s appearance might differ depending on the context (trailer, 3D model, in-game).

*The Witcher 4*, the first in a new trilogy, features Ciri as the protagonist instead of Geralt. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga explained to IGN that this was a natural choice, stemming from the books and the character’s established narrative arc, following Geralt’s previous storyline conclusion. The younger age of Ciri, compared to Geralt, allows for more creative freedom in shaping her character and exploring her story.

While acknowledging potential negative reactions to Ciri’s role, both Mitręga and Kalemba emphasized that her position as protagonist was a deliberate and well-considered decision, based on extensive discussions and a belief in the narrative potential of her story. Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, also expressed his support for this choice in a separate interview with IGN.
Further exclusive content on *The Witcher 4*, including a trailer breakdown and an interview discussing the game’s development strategy to avoid repeating the launch issues of *Cyberpunk 2077*, is available.
