正如任天堂所证实的那样，《塞尔达传说：王国之泪》(TotK)和《塞尔达传说：旷野之息》(BotW)发生在该系列既定时间线之外。这一消息是在2024年悉尼任天堂嘉年华上公布的，任天堂在活动中分享了“塞尔达传说历史”时间线幻灯片。
自1987年诞生以来，《塞尔达传说》系列一直以英雄林克在多个时间线中与邪恶势力战斗为特色。然而，新闻网站Vooks报道的最新消息显示，BotW和TotK中的事件同样与之前的游戏事件无关。
从《塞尔达传说：天空之剑》到《塞尔达传说：时之笛》，时间线在后者事件之后分叉并分裂。更广泛的塞尔达系列时间线分为两条路径：“英雄战败”时间线，通向《塞尔达传说：众神三角力量》等作品；以及“英雄胜利”时间线，它又分支成“童年”时间线（包括《塞尔达传说：面具》 、《塞尔达传说：黄昏公主》和《塞尔达传说：四之剑+》）；和“成年”时间线（包括《塞尔达传说：风之杖》和《塞尔达传说：幻影沙漏》）。
