SAG-AFTRA, the actors' and broadcasters' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, targeting industry leaders such as Activision, Electronic Arts, and others. The union's primary grievance revolves around the unregulated deployment of AI in video game production. Furthermore, the Interim Interactive Media Agreement and the Interim Interactive Localization Agreement provide temporary solutions addressing various aspects of employment, including compensation, AI usage stipulations, rest periods, and payment terms. These agreements specifically exclude expansion packs and downloadable content, while allowing projects already approved to proceed.

Negotiations commenced in October 2022, culminating in a resounding 98.32% vote by SAG-AFTRA members in favor of strike authorization on September 24, 2023. Despite some progress, the deadlock persisted due to the employers' unwillingness to guarantee robust and enforceable AI protections. Union leadership, including President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, have emphasized the industry's substantial profits and the vital contributions of SAG-AFTRA members, reiterating their commitment to fair treatment and protection against AI exploitation.
