Guy Ritchie is officially stepping in to direct Road House 2, the long-anticipated sequel to the 2024 Amazon MGM reboot of the iconic action film. The news confirms that Jake Gyllenhaal will reprise his role as Elwood Dalton, the former UFC fighter turned tough-as-nails bouncer who takes on crime in a small Southern town.

The original Road House — a modern reimagining of the 1989 Patrick Swayze classic — launched to massive success on Prime Video, amassing over 50 million views in its first two weekends. It became Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched original film debut worldwide, underscoring the streaming giant’s growing power in the action genre.

However, the film’s journey wasn’t without controversy. Director Doug Liman, who helmed the 2024 version, publicly criticized Amazon for shifting the film’s release from a theatrical rollout to a streaming-only debut, despite the production being structured and budgeted for a theatrical release. Liman expressed outrage over the lack of compensation for cast and crew, emphasizing that no one involved — including Gyllenhaal and producer Joel Silver — received royalties or backend payments, despite the film’s massive viewership.

Despite Liman’s departure, Gyllenhaal has maintained that Amazon was transparent from the start about the streaming-first strategy, and he remains committed to the franchise.

Ritchie’s return to the Road House universe marks his third collaboration with Gyllenhaal, following:
