Guy Ritchie to Direct Road House Sequel with Jake Gyllenhaal

Guy Ritchie is set to direct the sequel to Amazon MGM’s 2024 remake of Road House, according to Variety. The follow-up will bring Jake Gyllenhaal back as Elwood Dalton, the ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer.

A sequel starring Gyllenhaal was officially confirmed in May of last year, shortly after the original film’s successful March 2024 debut. Road House drew more than 50 million views in its first two weekends on Prime Video, making it Amazon MGM Studios’ most-watched original film launch worldwide at the time.

Play2024’s Road House was directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers), but Liman quickly signaled he wouldn’t return after criticizing the film’s streaming debut.

“My issue with Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters—everyone was paid as if it were a theatrical release—and then Amazon changed course and no one got compensated,” Liman said at the time. “Forget the industry impact—50 million people saw Road House—I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong.”

Still, Gyllenhaal maintains that Amazon made it clear from the start that Road House would stream.

Road House 2 will mark the third collaboration between Ritchie and Gyllenhaal, and their second project for Amazon MGM after the critically praised but oddly titled 2023 war film Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. They’ve also teamed up for the upcoming action thriller In the Grey, which features Henry Cavill, though that film has no confirmed release date yet.

Details about Road House 2 remain limited, but the script is being penned by Will Beall (Gangster Squad, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F).

For now, Guy Ritchie has little time to pause. He directed multiple episodes of the newly launched Paramount+ series MobLand, starring Tom Hardy, and his next film, Fountain of Youth, arrives on Apple TV+ later this month.
