Killzone Composer Reflects on Series' Future: 'Sense People Want More Casual, Quick Games'

Apr 05,25(5 months ago)

The Killzone franchise, a beloved series from Sony, has been quiet for over a decade, leaving fans eager for its revival. In a recent interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, Killzone composer Joris de Man voiced his support for bringing the series back, adding to the growing chorus of enthusiasts hoping for a return.

De Man acknowledged the fan-driven petitions and the challenges of reviving such an iconic franchise. "I know that there have been petitions for it," he said. "I think it's [tricky] because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

When considering the potential format for Killzone's return, de Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than a brand new entry. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he explained. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."

The Killzone series is known for its slower-paced, weightier gameplay, which contrasts with faster-paced shooters like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, was noted for its input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected its responsiveness. The series is also characterized by its dark, gritty, and atmospheric visuals and tone.

Despite the enthusiasm from fans and de Man, a recent interview with the Washington Post indicated that Sony-owned developer Guerrilla has shifted its focus to the Horizon series, suggesting a move away from Killzone. However, with the last entry, Killzone Shadow Fall, released over a decade ago, the idea of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains appealing to many fans. While the future of Killzone remains uncertain, supporters can take comfort in knowing they have allies like Joris de Man in their corner.
