Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition Sparks Fan Concerns Over Future Content

Warner Bros. Games has unveiled Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, touted as the most comprehensive version of the brutal fighting game. However, the release has raised alarms among fans, who fear NetherRealm has shifted focus away from the title, potentially halting new DLC characters or major updates.

Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition bundles the core game with prior downloadable content, including the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack 1, and Kombat Pack 2.

The edition introduces fresh character skins for Johnny Cage, Kitana, Scorpion, and Shao Khan, drawing inspiration from the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 film, alongside a Mortal Kombat (2021) movie-inspired skin for Sub-Zero and a tournament-themed outfit for Liu Kang.

For fans, the Definitive Edition signals a potential end to Mortal Kombat 1’s lifecycle. While Warner Bros. and NetherRealm are known for releasing definitive editions, this launch carries a sense of closure. With no news of a Kombat Pack 3 or other significant updates, many believe the T-1000 guest character, set for release in March 2025, may mark the game’s final addition.

This prospect disappoints dedicated Mortal Kombat 1 fans who expected extended support. Many point to a September 2024 tweet from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon, who reassured fans that the studio remained committed to supporting the game long-term, countering concerns that focus had shifted to a new project.

“It feels like they’re wrapping things up with this edition, saying, ‘See you in a year or two for another pricey game stuffed with guest characters!’” one frustrated redditor commented.

“Mortal Kombat 1’s content cycle is shorter than the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game, which is just wild,” another remarked.

For context, in July 2021, NetherRealm confirmed it had begun work on Mortal Kombat 1, ending DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11 roughly two years and three months after its release. No such announcement has been made for Mortal Kombat 1 yet.

The game saw a brief revival in January with the surprise inclusion of Floyd, a pink ninja teased by Ed Boon for years, sparking a community-driven surge of excitement. However, this was a rare highlight in what many core fans view as a lackluster release.

The T-1000 Terminator, part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, joins Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian as the final DLC character. Speculation persists about a potential Kombat Pack 3, but questions linger regarding Mortal Kombat 1’s commercial performance.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company, remains optimistic about the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav emphasized that the company will focus on just four key titles, including Mortal Kombat.

Fans widely anticipate that NetherRealm’s next project could be a third Injustice game, though neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice series began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, followed by Injustice 2 in 2017. While NetherRealm alternated between Mortal Kombat and Injustice previously, it opted for the 2023 soft reboot of Mortal Kombat 1 instead of a new Injustice title.

In a June 2023 IGN interview, Ed Boon vaguely addressed this shift, citing factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to Unreal Engine 4 from Unreal Engine 3, used in Mortal Kombat 11.

“We moved to a new graphics engine, Unreal,” Boon explained. “With COVID and ensuring everyone’s safety, several factors led us to decide, ‘Let’s make another Mortal Kombat game and plan to return to Injustice later.’”

When asked directly, Boon confirmed that the Injustice franchise remains active.

“Absolutely not closed off,” he stated.

Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 5 million copies, contributing to the franchise’s 100 million total sales. However, compared to Mortal Kombat 11, which surpassed 15 million units by 2022, and Mortal Kombat X’s nearly 11 million, Mortal Kombat 1’s performance has been underwhelming.
