The Live-Action "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" Adaptation: Actors' Unplayed Games Spark Fan Debate

A surprising revelation emerged from San Diego Comic-Con last July: the lead actors in the live-action "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" adaptation, Ryoma Takeuchi and Kento Kaku, had never played the games. This deliberate decision, according to the production team, aimed for a fresh, unburdened interpretation of the characters.

Takeuchi explained, through a translator, that while aware of the games' global popularity, he refrained from playing to approach the role organically. Kaku similarly emphasized the team's intention to create their own version, respecting the source material's spirit while forging a unique on-screen portrayal.

This decision, however, has ignited a heated discussion among fans. Some express concern that the show might stray too far from the source material, particularly following the announcement that the iconic karaoke minigame would be absent. Others argue that the actors' gaming experience isn't crucial for a successful adaptation, citing other examples.

The recent news adds to pre-existing fan anxieties regarding the show's faithfulness to the games. While optimism remains, questions persist about whether the adaptation will truly capture the essence of the beloved franchise.

Ella Purnell, lead actress in Prime Video's "Fallout" adaptation (which garnered 65 million viewers in two weeks), offered a contrasting perspective. While acknowledging the creative autonomy of the showrunners, she highlighted the benefits of immersing oneself in the game world for a deeper understanding.

Despite the actors’ unfamiliarity with the games, RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama expressed confidence in directors Masaharu Take and Kengo Takimoto's vision. He described Director Take's understanding of the story as that of an original author, anticipating a unique and enjoyable adaptation. Yokoyama further emphasized the value of a fresh interpretation, acknowledging the games' already perfected portrayal of Kiryu and welcoming the show's innovative approach.
