Palworld Modders Restore Mechanics Removed Due to Nintendo, Pokémon Patent Dispute
Palworld modders are actively working to reinstate gameplay mechanics that developer Pocketpair had to remove due to legal action from Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. In a recent development, Pocketpair acknowledged that modifications in the game's updates were necessitated by the ongoing patent lawsuit.
Launched early in 2024 on Steam for $30 and included in Game Pass for Xbox and PC, Palworld quickly shattered sales and concurrent player records. The game's overwhelming success led to significant profits, which Pocketpair's CEO Takuro Mizobe admitted were beyond their initial handling capacity. Capitalizing on this success, Pocketpair swiftly signed a deal with Sony to create Palworld Entertainment, aimed at expanding the Palworld IP. The game later became available on PS5.
Following Palworld's massive launch, the game drew comparisons to Pokémon, with accusations of copying Pokémon designs. Instead of pursuing a copyright infringement lawsuit, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a patent lawsuit against Pocketpair, seeking 5 million yen (approximately $32,846) each in damages, along with late payment fees and an injunction to halt Palworld's distribution.
In November, Pocketpair confirmed the lawsuit was over three Japan-based patents related to capturing Pokémon in a virtual environment. Palworld featured a similar mechanic with the Pal Sphere, akin to the one in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Six months later, Pocketpair admitted that recent changes, including those in Patch v0.3.11 released in November 2024, were a direct result of legal pressures. This update removed the ability to summon Pals by throwing Pal Spheres, replacing it with a static summon beside the player. Additional mechanics were altered as well.
Pocketpair stated that without these modifications, the gameplay experience would have suffered even more significantly. Last week's Patch v0.5.5 further adjusted Palworld, changing gliding mechanics to require a glider in the player's inventory instead of using Pals, though Pals still offer passive gliding buffs.
These alterations were described by Pocketpair as "compromises" made to avoid a potential injunction that could impact Palworld's development and sales. However, modders have quickly responded by restoring the original gliding feature. Primarinabee's Glider Restoration mod, available on Nexus Mods, reverts the changes made in Patch v0.5.5. This mod, which requires a glider in the inventory, has seen hundreds of downloads since its release on May 10.
Additionally, a mod for the throw-to-release mechanic exists, though it does not fully replicate the original feature, omitting the ball-throwing animation. The longevity of these mods remains uncertain amidst the ongoing lawsuit.
At the Game Developers Conference in March, IGN interviewed John "Bucky" Buckley, communications director and publishing manager for Pocketpair. During his talk at the conference, Buckley discussed Palworld's challenges, including allegations of using generative AI and stealing Pokémon models, both of which have been debunked. He also touched on the unexpected nature of Nintendo's patent infringement lawsuit against Pocketpair.
