Bloodborne PSX Demake Faces Copyright Claim, Modder Theorizes Official Remake

Feb 25,25(9 months ago)

Sony's copyright claims against Bloodborne fan projects are intensifying. Following last week's takedown of the Bloodborne 60fps mod by Lance McDonald, Lilith Walther, creator of the impressive Bloodborne PSX demake, reported a copyright claim on a YouTube video of her project by MarkScan Enforcement, a company reportedly hired by Sony. McDonald confirmed MarkScan's involvement, noting they were also responsible for the DMCA takedown of his 60fps patch.

This aggressive action by Sony comes amidst significant fan interest and recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation, enabling near-remaster quality 60fps gameplay on PC. While Sony remains silent, McDonald speculates that these DMCA notices are a preemptive measure to clear the way for an official 60fps remake or remaster, suggesting trademark concerns. This theory is fueled by the lack of official support for Bloodborne on newer platforms despite consistent fan demand.

Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered his perspective, suggesting that Hidetaka Miyazaki's deep personal attachment to Bloodborne and his reluctance to allow others to work on it might be the reason behind the game's continued absence from next-gen platforms. While Miyazaki has acknowledged the game's suitability for modern hardware, he often deflects questions about a sequel or remaster, citing FromSoftware's lack of IP ownership.

Despite these recent developments, the future of Bloodborne remains uncertain, leaving fans in a state of anticipation and speculation nearly a decade after the game's initial release. The situation highlights the complex interplay between fan creativity, intellectual property rights, and the desires of both developers and publishers.
