Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, allows players to leave messages for one another, offering assistance, playful misdirection, or humorous commentary. While a highly successful feature in previous games, its inclusion in Nightreign is deemed incompatible with the game's intended shorter, more intense gameplay loops.

Preserving Asynchronous Elements

Despite the removal of the messaging system, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, a key element of the Elden Ring experience, will return, allowing players to learn from others' deaths and even loot their fallen counterparts. This reinforces the game's focus on a streamlined, action-packed experience.

A "Compressed" RPG Experience

FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" in Nightreign, characterized by consistent intensity, varied gameplay, and minimal downtime. This vision, along with the game's three-day structure, informs the decision to omit the messaging system. The goal is a more focused and impactful multiplayer experience, contrasting with the often sprawling nature of its predecessor.

Nightreign, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is currently slated for a 2025 release, though a precise release date remains unannounced.
