"Ghost of Yotei: Hokkaido's Blend of Danger and Beauty"

Sucker Punch, the developers behind Ghost of Yōtei, have chosen Hokkaido as the main setting for their latest game, offering insights into their decision-making process and their immersive trips to Japan. Dive deeper to understand how they've meticulously recreated Hokkaido within the game and the experiences that shaped their vision.
Ghost of Yōtei: Embracing Hokkaido as the Main Setting
A Sense of Authenticity in Fictionalizing Real-World Locations

Ghost of Yōtei is set to vividly bring the landscapes of Japan to life, with Ezo (now known as Hokkaido) serving as the central backdrop. In a detailed PlayStation Blog post dated May 15, Nate Fox, Game Director at Sucker Punch, explained the selection of Hokkaido as the setting for protagonist Atsu's narrative journey.
Sucker Punch has a proven history of authentically recreating real-world locations, as evidenced by their successful depiction of Tsushima Island in the first Ghost series game. This effort was widely acclaimed, particularly by Japanese critics, leading to Game Director Nate Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell being appointed ambassadors of Tsushima for their cultural representation.

In 2021, Tsushima's Mayor Naoki Hitakatsu expressed gratitude for Sucker Punch's work, noting, "Even many Japanese are unfamiliar with the history of the Gen-ko period. Globally, Tsushima remains relatively unknown. We are deeply thankful for their efforts in sharing our story with stunning graphics and deep narratives."
The team's aim has always been to craft a respectful and authentic portrayal of these locations. For Ghost of Yōtei, Hokkaido was chosen for its stunning beauty and its historical significance as the frontier of the Japanese empire in 1603. Fox emphasized that this dramatic setting was ideal for Atsu's tale of revenge, illustrating the impact of her actions on her reputation. "If you're going to tell a ghost story, do it in a dramatic location," Fox remarked.
Blending Beauty and Danger Seamlessly

To ensure an authentic representation, the team embarked on two research trips to Japan. These journeys were instrumental in understanding the setting and culture, with Fox describing them as the most rewarding aspect of the project. One notable location visited was Shiretoko National Park, which perfectly encapsulated the blend of natural beauty and inherent danger.
The park's serene yet perilous environment inspired the developers, as Fox explained, "A perfect marriage of beauty and danger, that was exactly the atmosphere we wanted for our game. That was the moment I knew Hokkaido was the right choice."

Another significant visit was to Mt. Yōtei, revered by the Ainu as "Machineshir," or "the Female Mountain." The Ainu, indigenous to Hokkaido, have a profound connection with nature and consider the mountain sacred. For the game, Mt. Yōtei symbolizes both the island and Atsu's lost family.
Fox highlighted the enriching experience of interacting with locals and developing new ideas during their time on the island. These trips were crucial in capturing the essence of Hokkaido for their fictional adaptation. Acknowledging their initial lack of deep understanding of Japanese culture, Sucker Punch is committed to addressing this through further detailed representations.
As one of the studio's most ambitious projects, Ghost of Yōtei is eagerly anticipated by fans and is set to launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. For the latest updates on the game, be sure to check out our dedicated article below!
