Lost Star Wars Cut Premieres in London

Believe you've experienced 1977's Star Wars? Think differently. What most audiences have encountered are later modified versions distributed after the original theatrical release – revisions personally adjusted by George Lucas that ultimately formed the controversial "special editions." But here's exciting news: dedicated fans may finally witness the authentic original version Lucas abandoned years ago.
A Cinematic Time Capsule Emerges
This June, the British Film Institute's Film on Film Festival will debut with an extraordinary screening – one of the last surviving Technicolor prints from Star Wars' initial 1977 release, as reported by The Telegraph. Remarkably, this marks the first public projection of this print since December 1978, though it previously appeared on VHS releases.
The Evolution of A New Hope
Lucas initiated his modifications during Star Wars' 1981 theatrical re-release, after which only various "special editions" received official distribution. The upcoming festival's print promises exceptional quality – meticulously preserved at -5°C (23°F) for forty years to maintain optimal condition.
Lucas historically maintained unwavering opposition to screenings of his original cut (now titled Episode IV: A New Hope), famously stating in a 2004 Associated Press interview:
"The Special Edition represents my true vision. The original exists on VHS for those who want it, but I won't invest millions restoring what I consider an unfinished work," Lucas explained. "This is the film as intended – I'd rather face criticism for the version I love than defend something I view as incomplete."
A Surprising Reversal
The reasons behind Lucasfilm's apparent change of heart regarding this screening remain unclear, but devoted fans worldwide are celebrating this unprecedented opportunity to experience cinematic history in its purest form.
