Netflix has confirmed plans to introduce AI-powered advertising – including paused content ads – during shows for its ad-supported subscribers starting in 2026.

According to Media Play News, details remain unclear about how these ads will target viewers. Will they be personalized based on viewing history? Or tailored to currently watched content? The technical implementation and presentation format currently remain undisclosed, but the rollout is confirmed.

Advertising President Amy Reinhard framed this move as combining Netflix's core strengths: "Companies typically excel either in technology or entertainment," she noted during New York's Upfront advertising event. "Our unique advantage lies in mastering both."

Reinhard added: "Compared to competitors, we maintain stronger viewer engagement throughout – remarkably, our subscribers show equal attention to mid-roll ads as they do to our original content."

Data shows ad-tier users average 41 monthly Netflix viewing hours. Kotaku calculates this translates to approximately three ad-filled hours monthly – substantial exposure even before considering AI enhancements arriving in 2026.

Netflix hasn't announced specific implementation dates for this advertising evolution.
