《任天堂明星大乱斗》是任天堂的跨界格斗游戏，汇集了该公司众多标志性游戏中的人物角色。但与游戏名称所暗示的不同，角色阵容中只有少数是真正的兄弟——有些甚至都不是男性。那么，为什么它被称为“任天堂明星大乱斗”呢？任天堂此前并未给出官方解释，但最近，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的创造者樱井政博对此做出了说明！在他的YouTube视频系列中，樱井政博解释说，《任天堂明星大乱斗》的名称源于这款格斗游戏系列实际上是关于“朋友们解决一些小摩擦”。据樱井政博说，已故的前任任天堂社长岩田聪也参与了《任天堂明星大乱斗》名称的确定。
“岩田先生也参与了‘任天堂明星大乱斗’这个名字的构思。我们团队成员提出了一堆可能的名称和词语，”樱井政博在他的视频中详细说明。然后，他们与《地球冒险》系列的创造者糸井重里先生举行了一次会议，最终确定了该系列的名称。樱井政博补充道：“岩田先生是选择‘兄弟’这个词的人。他的理由是，即使这些角色根本就不是兄弟，使用这个词也增加了这样的细微差别：他们不仅仅是在战斗——他们是朋友，正在解决一些小摩擦！”
除了《任天堂明星大乱斗》的来历之外，樱井政博还分享了他第一次遇到岩田聪以及其他对这位前任任天堂社长的美好回忆。据樱井政博说，岩田聪亲自帮助编写了《任天堂明星大乱斗》原型（当时被称为《龙王：任天堂64格斗游戏》）的代码。
