Sony Leverages Astro Bot for Inclusive "Family-Friendly" Approach
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO Hermen Hulst and Astro Bot game director Nicolas Doucet recently discussed the game's significance on the PlayStation podcast, revealing PlayStation's strategic shift towards a more family-friendly gaming market.
Astro Bot: A Cornerstone of PlayStation's Family-Friendly Expansion
PlayStation aims to broaden its appeal with games designed for smiles and laughter.
For Nicolas Doucet of Team Asobi, Astro Bot's ambition was always to become a PlayStation flagship title appealing to all ages. The team envisioned Astro as a character alongside PlayStation's established franchises, aiming for broad appeal across age groups. Doucet emphasized the importance of reaching a diverse player base, including both experienced and first-time gamers, particularly children experiencing their first video game. The priority, he stated, was to create a joyful experience that brings smiles and laughter.
Doucet described Astro Bot as a "back-to-basics" game, prioritizing engaging gameplay over complex narratives. The focus was on creating a consistently enjoyable experience from start to finish. The team prioritized relaxation and fun, aiming to evoke laughter as much as smiles.
CEO Hulst confirmed PlayStation Studios' commitment to developing diverse genres, highlighting the family market as a crucial area of focus. He praised Team Asobi's achievement in creating a game that rivals the best platformers, noting its accessibility for players of all ages and skill levels.
Hulst emphasized Astro Bot's importance to PlayStation, citing its pre-installation on millions of PlayStation 5 consoles and its role in showcasing PlayStation's innovation and legacy in single-player gaming. The game has become synonymous with PlayStation's commitment to quality and innovation.
Sony's Need for More Original IP and the Concord Closure
The Astro Bot podcast discussion also touched upon PlayStation's broader strategy and the need for more original intellectual property (IP).
Hulst highlighted the growth of PlayStation's community and the diversification of its game portfolio. He viewed Astro Bot's launch as a celebration of PlayStation's strengths.
Sony's CEO Kenichiro Yoshida recently acknowledged a lack of original IPs developed from the ground up, a sentiment echoed by CFO Hiroki Totoki. This strategic deficiency was highlighted by the recent closure of the first-person shooter Concord, which underperformed despite its initial promise.
Financial analyst Atul Goyal linked Sony's focus on IP development to its broader goal of becoming a fully integrated media company. He emphasized the importance of creating or acquiring IP to mitigate the risk of competitors filling the void.
The Concord closure, coming shortly after Yoshida's comments, underscores Sony's ongoing efforts to refine its IP strategy and create a more balanced and diverse portfolio of games. The future of Concord remains uncertain.
