Valve Revamps Deadlock Development Amid Online Decline

Deadlock, the innovative MOBA-shooter from Valve, has seen a significant decline in player numbers recently, with the game's peak online count now hovering below 20,000 players. In response to this, Valve is making strategic changes to the game's development process, aiming to enhance the overall quality and player experience.

Valve has announced that it will move away from its previous two-week update cycle for Deadlock. This change will allow the development team more flexibility and time to implement more substantial updates without the pressure of a fixed timeline. According to a developer, this adjustment is expected to lead to more meaningful improvements in the game. While major updates will no longer follow a strict schedule, hotfixes will continue to be deployed regularly to address immediate issues as they arise.

The decision to shift from bi-weekly updates comes after the developers realized that the previous cycle did not allow enough time for changes to fully integrate and function effectively within the game. This led to Valve reevaluating its approach to ensure that Deadlock can reach its full potential.

Despite the drop in player numbers—from a peak of over 170,000 to the current range of 18,000 to 20,000 daily players—Valve remains optimistic. Deadlock is still in its early development stages and does not yet have a release date, suggesting that fans should not expect to see the game launch in the near future, especially with Valve's attention partly focused on the new Half-Life project.

Valve's strategy is clear: prioritize quality over speed. The company believes that by focusing on creating a high-quality product, satisfied players will naturally contribute to the game's financial success. This approach mirrors the development journey of another Valve title, Dota 2, which saw similar adjustments in its early days. So, while the current player numbers might raise eyebrows, there's no need for concern. Valve is committed to taking the time necessary to ensure Deadlock meets the high standards expected by its community.
