Ghost of Yotei: Sucker Punch's Most Ambitious Game Yet

Freedom to Hunt the Yotei Six

In a recent interview with Famitsu on April 24, Sucker Punch unveiled exciting new details about Ghost of Yotei, the standalone sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. Creative Director Jason Cornell emphasized that the game will feature the most freedom in gameplay and the largest maps ever crafted by the studio. Players will have the autonomy to discover the locations of the Yotei Six and choose how to avenge them, breaking away from linear gameplay.

Last week, the PS5 release date for Ghost of Yotei was announced, along with a captivating new trailer titled "The Onryō’s List." This trailer introduced fans to the protagonist, Atsu, and her quest for vengeance against the Yotei Six, showcasing both story elements and gameplay.

More Melee Weapons

Expanding on the theme of freedom, Ghost of Yotei introduces a diverse range of melee weapons for protagonist Atsu. In addition to the traditional samurai sword, players can now wield an odachi, a chain sickle, double swords, and a spear. Creative Director Nate Fox confirmed these additions, noting that while the sword remains central, other weapons can be learned from masters encountered throughout the game's expansive world.

Fox also highlighted that Atsu's non-samurai status allows for a more flexible combat approach. She can utilize any weapon dropped by defeated enemies, adding a dynamic layer to combat. However, this flexibility is limited to certain weapons, ensuring strategic depth in battles.

Ezo as the Setting

Ghost of Yotei is set in 1603 around Mt. Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), a region described by Cornell as a "stage that balances a lawless environment with no security yet and an environment where danger lurks in the beauty of nature." This setting will also feature the Ainu culture and its people, an indigenous group native to Japan's northern regions.

To accurately represent the Ainu culture, the developers conducted extensive research in Hokkaido, visiting museums and consulting with cultural experts. Cornell was inspired by the region's stunning natural beauty, motivating the team to bring this setting to life for a global audience.

Following the success of Ghost of Tsushima, which was praised for its authentic depiction of Japanese culture, Ghost of Yotei aims to maintain this standard. The game will showcase the "dangers lurking in the magnificent wilderness of Ezo," promising an immersive experience.
