This collaboration includes a fully draftable, Standard-legal set and four 100-card preconstructed decks. These decks blend reprints with new Final Fantasy-themed art and brand-new cards designed specifically for Commander. Each deck is meticulously crafted around a single Final Fantasy game, offering a deep dive into its lore and iconic moments.
According to Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt, the choice of games was a careful balancing act between gameplay and story recognition. While Final Fantasy VII and XIV were easy choices, games VI and X required more deliberation, ultimately selected due to their popularity within the development team.
The design team faced interesting challenges. For Final Fantasy VII, the deck draws inspiration from both the original PS1 game and the modern remake trilogy. Principal Narrative Game Designer Dillon Deveney explains that the narrative follows the 1997 classic, but the art style incorporates elements from the remakes.
Final Fantasy VI presented a unique challenge, lacking the modern art references of the other games. The team worked closely with the Final Fantasy VI team to create character designs that feel both familiar and fresh, blending elements from original concept art, sprites, and the Pixel Remaster.
Commander deck leaders were also carefully chosen. While Cloud is the natural choice for Final Fantasy VII, other selections involved more brainstorming. Y'shtola from Final Fantasy XIV was selected for her popularity, spellcasting abilities, and rich storyline, specifically focusing on her Shadowbringers arc.
The color identities of the decks were strategically chosen to reflect both the game's themes and desired gameplay. All four decks include White, which aids in incorporating a wide range of heroes. Deck strategies range from rebuilding your party (FFVI), utilizing equipment strategies (FFVII), leveraging a sphere grid leveling system (FFX), and focusing on noncreature spellcasting (FFXIV).
Beyond the main characters, the decks feature many beloved Final Fantasy characters as legendary creatures and spells. While specifics remain under wraps, fans can expect to see many familiar faces.
The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th, featuring both regular and Collector's Edition versions of the decks. All sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will be represented across the entire product line.
