Bloodborne Fans Celebrate 10th Anniversary, Rally for Return to Yharnam Amid No Sequel or Update
Today marks the 10th anniversary of *Bloodborne*, and fans are commemorating the occasion with another "Return to Yharnam" community event. FromSoftware's PlayStation 4 masterpiece, which launched on March 24, 2015, solidified the Japanese developer's reputation as one of the industry's finest. The game received widespread critical and commercial success, leading many to anticipate a sequel akin to the *Dark Souls* series. However, a decade later, there has been no follow-up, remaster, or even a next-gen update to bring *Bloodborne* to 60fps. This silence from Sony has left fans puzzled and frustrated, given the game's enduring popularity and demand for more content.
Earlier this year, some insight into this situation was provided by Shuhei Yoshida, a PlayStation legend who left Sony. In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, Yoshida shared his personal theory on why *Bloodborne* hasn't seen any updates or remasters. He emphasized that this was not based on insider knowledge but rather his own speculation. Yoshida suggested that Hidetaka Miyazaki, the head of FromSoftware and the creative force behind *Bloodborne*, might be too busy with other successful projects to work on a sequel or remaster himself. Additionally, Yoshida theorized that Miyazaki might not want anyone else to touch the game, and Sony respects his wishes.Miyazaki's success has indeed been remarkable, not just with the influential Dark Souls series but also with the mainstream hit Elden Ring, which has elevated FromSoftware to new heights. Following Bloodborne, Miyazaki directed Dark Souls 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and Elden Ring. His future projects remain undisclosed, but he has acknowledged that Bloodborne could benefit from a release on more modern hardware.
In the absence of official updates, modders have attempted to enhance the Bloodborne experience. However, Sony has not been supportive of these efforts. For instance, Lance McDonald, creator of a 60fps mod for Bloodborne, received a takedown notice from Sony Interactive Entertainment, forcing him to remove links to his patch. Similarly, Lilith Walther, behind projects like Nightmare Kart and the Bloodborne PSX demake, faced a copyright claim on an old YouTube video.
Recent advancements in PS4 emulation have allowed fans to experience Bloodborne at 60fps on PC, thanks to efforts like those covered by Digital Foundry with ShadPS4. This breakthrough might have prompted Sony's aggressive stance on unauthorized modifications. IGN reached out to Sony for comment but received no response.
As a result, Bloodborne enthusiasts have taken matters into their own hands, organizing community events like the "Return to Yharnam" initiative. Today's event, coinciding with the game's 10th anniversary, encourages players to start new characters, summon cooperators and invaders, and leave in-game messages to signify their participation in this community-driven celebration. With no official updates on the horizon, these fan-organized events may be the closest Bloodborne fans get to experiencing new content in the beloved game's universe.
