Ex-Starfield Artist Explains Cut of Graphic Violence

Summary

  • Starfield's lack of graphic violence was an intentional choice, influenced by both technical challenges and the game's intended tone.
  • Dennis Mejillones, a character artist who worked on Starfield and Fallout 4 at Bethesda, highlighted these reasons in a recent interview.

Starfield was initially planned to feature more intense violence, including decapitations and detailed kill animations, but these elements were ultimately removed. This decision was influenced by the game's numerous character suits and helmets, which made animating such graphic violence technically challenging and potentially unrealistic or buggy. Given Starfield's ongoing technical issues even after multiple updates, Bethesda made a strategic choice to avoid further graphical complications.

Moreover, the decision to reduce graphic violence was also driven by the game's desired tone. Dennis Mejillones explained that while Fallout's gore contributes to its dark humor, such elements wouldn't align with Starfield's more serious and realistic sci-fi atmosphere. Although Starfield occasionally nods to Bethesda's more violent games, such as the recent addition of Doom-inspired content, the overall experience is intended to be more grounded.

Feedback from fans has highlighted a desire for increased realism in various aspects of Starfield, including its nightclubs, which some find lack the gritty feel seen in other sci-fi games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect. Introducing over-the-top violence could have further detracted from the game's immersion and realism. Therefore, Bethesda's decision to tone down the gore appears to be well-suited to maintaining Starfield's intended tone and enhancing player engagement.
