Warner Bros. Closes Studios, Axes Wonder Woman Game

Oct 21,25(5 months ago)

Warner Bros. is canceling its planned Wonder Woman game and shutting down three studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego, according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier.

Schreier broke the news on Bluesky today, followed by a detailed report on Bloomberg. Shortly after Schreier's post, WB confirmed the studio closures to Kotaku with an official statement:

We've made difficult strategic decisions to align our development studios and investments around key franchises including Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. After thorough evaluation, we're closing three development studios - Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This reflects our evolving strategy rather than the capability of these talented teams.

The Wonder Woman game development by Monolith will be discontinued. While we aimed to deliver a premium experience for this iconic character, it no longer aligns with our strategic priorities. We recognize Monolith's legacy in creating exceptional gaming experiences and appreciate all employees' contributions across these studios. Despite today's challenges, we remain committed to delivering high-quality games developed by our world-class teams and returning our Games division to profitability and growth by 2025.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported development challenges with Wonder Woman, including reboots and director changes in early 2024. These issues coincided with broader struggles within WB's gaming division, including Rocksteady layoffs, the underwhelming performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and MultiVersus' closure.

This follows recent leadership changes at WB Games, with longtime executive David Haddad departing amid rumors about the division's potential sale.

The studio closures particularly impact WB's DC gaming initiatives. Notably, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran recently stated the first DC Universe game remains "years away."

These shutdowns mark the end of three significant studios. Monolith Productions, acquired by WB in 2004, first opened in 1994 and created the acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel - with the former introducing the patented Nemesis system.

Player First Games (founded 2019) developed MultiVersus, which despite critical acclaim and initial success fell short of WB's expectations. WB San Diego (established 2019) specialized in mobile free-to-play titles.

This continues an industry-wide trend of contractions, with over 10,000 gaming professionals laid off in 2023 and 14,000+ in 2024. While 2025 has seen numerous closures, accurate layoff figures are harder to track due to reduced corporate transparency.
