Take-Two Boss Says 'Legacy' Civilization Audience Will Eventually Come Around on Civilization 7 Amid 'Mixed' Steam User Reviews
Civilization VII has arrived, and while its Steam user reviews currently sit at "Mixed," Take-Two's CEO remains confident that dedicated fans will ultimately embrace the game. The 4X strategy title is currently available through early access, primarily reaching hardcore Civilization enthusiasts. These players have voiced concerns on Steam regarding the user interface, limited map variety, and the perceived absence of expected features.
Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback and pledged improvements, including UI enhancements, the addition of cooperative multiplayer teams, and a greater diversity of map types.
In an interview with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the mixed reception, referencing Eurogamer's 2/5 review, but expressed optimism about the game's long-term appeal. He highlighted the game's 81 Metacritic score and numerous reviews exceeding 90, while acknowledging the negative outliers. Zelnick believes the initial apprehension among longtime fans stems from the significant changes implemented in Civilization VII. He anticipates that increased playtime will lead to a shift in perception, describing the game's early performance as "very encouraging."
Zelnick stated, “The Metacritic reviews are at 81, which is really solid. We have more than 20 press reviews with a score over 90. We have some negative outliers as well, including a 40 from Eurogamer…We think that as people play the game longer, the sentiment improves…our legacy Civ audience is a little bit nervous about what they initially see and then they realize, wow, this is actually really incredible, and they dive in.” He further addressed concerns regarding the UI, promising improvements.

Despite Zelnick's confidence in the game's long-term success, Firaxis faces the immediate challenge of improving player sentiment, particularly on Steam. The platform's user review rating is critical, impacting both public perception and the game's visibility.
