Yoko Taro Fears AI Will Jobless Game Creators, Reducing Them to 'Bards'

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in video games has sparked considerable debate, with notable figures like NieR series director Yoko Taro expressing apprehension about its potential impact on the gaming industry. In a recent interview at Famitsu, translated by Automaton, a panel of renowned Japanese game developers, including Yoko Taro, Kotaro Uchikoshi of Zero Escape and AI: The Somnium Files fame, Kazutaka Kodaka from Danganronpa, and Jiro Ishii of 428: Shibuya Scramble, delved into the future of adventure games and the role of AI.

Kotaro Uchikoshi voiced his concerns about the rapid evolution of AI technology, suggesting that AI-generated adventure games might soon become mainstream. He acknowledged, however, that current AI systems struggle to produce writing that matches the depth and creativity of human-crafted narratives. Uchikoshi emphasized the importance of preserving the "human touch" in game development to remain competitive against AI advancements.

Yoko Taro shared similar worries, highlighting the potential for AI to displace game creators. He speculated that within the next 50 years, game creators might be viewed similarly to bards—artists of a bygone era. Both Yoko and Jiro Ishii conceded that AI could potentially replicate the intricate worlds and narratives of their games, including unexpected plot twists.

Kazutaka Kodaka, however, offered a different perspective. He argued that even if AI could mimic their creative styles, it would lack the authentic essence of a true creator. Kodaka likened this to the uniqueness of David Lynch's style, suggesting that while others might emulate it, only Lynch could authentically evolve it while retaining its distinctive feel.

Yoko Taro explored the possibility of using AI to generate new scenarios within adventure games, proposing it could offer players personalized routes. Kodaka countered this by pointing out that such personalization could diminish the shared experience that games often provide.

The discourse on AI in gaming extends beyond these creators, with companies like Capcom, Activision, Microsoft, and PlayStation also engaging with the topic. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has noted the creative potential of generative AI, but also highlighted the complexities surrounding intellectual property rights. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the role of AI remains a pivotal point of discussion and experimentation.
