Assassin's Creed 2 & 3: Series' Writing Peak

Assassin's Creed 2 & 3: Series' Writing Peak

One of the most shocking revelations in Assassin's Creed history occurs early in AC3, when players realize Haytham Kenway's group aren't assassins at all - they're Templars. Up until this moment, Haytham had perfectly played the role of protagonist - charismatic like Ezio, liberating Native Americans from prisons, and facing off against arrogant British soldiers. That iconic line, "May the Father of Understanding guide us," hits like a gut punch, completely reframing everything we thought we knew.

This brilliant storytelling moment showcases Assassin's Creed at its finest. While the first game introduced compelling assassination gameplay targets lacked depth. AC2 gave us Ezio's unforgettable journey, yet failed to develop equally interesting antagonists. Only with AC3 did Ubisoft achieve perfect symmetry between hunter and hunted - crafting villains as nuanced as our protagonists.

The underappreciated AC3 features the series' best balance of gameplay and story.

Despite recent RPG iterations receiving praise, many longtime fans argue the franchise has lost its way. Some criticize increasingly fantastical elements battling gods. Others debate historical accuracy regarding figures like Yasuke. But for me, the real decline began when character-driven narratives became buried beneath bloated open worlds.

The shift toward RPG mechanics - dialogue choices, skill trees, cosmetics - came at storytelling's expense. While AC Odyssey offers more content than AC2, much feels hollow compared to previous games' laser-focused narratives. Protagonists suffer most, stretched too thin across branching dialogue paths rather than receiving Ezio or Haytham's meticulous character development.

Contrast this with AC3's unforgettable moments - like Haytham's heartbreaking final words to Connor:

"Don't think I have any intention of caressing your cheek and saying I was wrong... I'm proud of you in a way. You've shown great conviction. Strength. Courage. All noble qualities. I should have killed you long ago."

Haytham Kenway remains one of Assassin's Creed's most complex characters.

The series' moral ambiguity suffered too. Earlier games brilliantly blurred lines between Assassins and Templars - particularly AC3, where dying Templars force Connor (and players) to confront hard truths. William Johnson arguing Templars could prevent Native genocide. Thomas Hickey questioning Assassin ideals. Even Washington's shocking betrayal reinforces Haytham's warnings about revolutionary hypocrisy.

Ultimately, the enduring popularity of "Ezio's Family" speaks volumes - it wasn't just background music, but emotional shorthand for the personal journeys that once defined this series. While I appreciate modern entries' technical achievements, I long for the days when Assassin's Creed prioritized tight storytelling over endless content. Sadly, in today's gaming landscape of live-service ambitions, such narrative focus seems increasingly rare.
