John Carpenter drops 'The Thing' clue, fan cracks it

One of the most brilliant aspects of John Carpenter's iconic 1982 sci-fi horror film The Thing lies in its deliberately ambiguous ending. For over four decades, fans have debated whether Kurt Russell's character R.J. MacReady or Keith David's Childs transforms into the alien entity in the final scene - a mystery Carpenter carefully crafted without any definitive clues... until recently.

During a special 4K screening at Los Angeles' David Geffen Theater on March 22, the horror maestro revealed to Parasite director Bong Joon Ho that the film contains a "giant hint" about who ultimately becomes The Thing. With characteristic humor, Carpenter added he'd disclose this secret knowledge to anyone sending "an envelope to my house" containing an undisclosed sum.

Intriguingly, Carpenter shared that neither Russell nor David knew their character's ultimate fate during production. "They had no clue," he admitted. "But they had to play it human. The creature imitates perfectly - it could be one of us, someone in the audience, with no way to tell. So I knew, they didn't know."

PlayFollowing the event, independent filmmaker Joe Russo (*not* the Marvel director) shared his theory on X (formerly Twitter): "I think I found that hint."

Russo pointed to the scene where MacReady learns the creature replicates at cellular level, meaning they should only consume items they've personally handled. Despite this warning, MacReady shares his whiskey with Childs in the finale. While this could indicate forgetfulness, Russo argues it suggests MacReady is already The Thing. "As soon as Childs drinks, The Thing has defeated its final skeptical threat," he analyzes.

Russo further notes how MacReady's final line - "Why don't we just wait here for a little while?" - perfectly suits this scenario. He even reinterprets the creature's death scene: "Did you see it die... or witness a superior imitation eliminate an inferior one to better infiltrate society post-rescue?"

While some fans embraced this theory, others maintain Childs became the creature. "Childs disappears for a long stretch before the finale," noted one commenter, "though Keith David insists he remains human." Russo countered: "Carpenter confirmed neither actor knew. Childs always struck me as a deliberate red herring."

Regardless of interpretation, the discussion proves Carpenter's masterpiece continues to fascinate. Decades after its release, we're still uncovering new layers of the director's ingenious storytelling.
