Hunger: Multiplayer RPG with Extraction Loop, More Than Just a Game Mechanic
In a genre where extraction shooters are increasingly commonplace, standing out requires something special. That's why I was excited to meet with developers from Good Fun Corporation, who are crafting Hunger, an upcoming first-person action-RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5. This game features an innovative extraction loop and a unique twist on the typical zombie theme, aiming to break the mold of the standard extraction shooter.
During my visit, the team showcased an early build of Hunger, and while they weren’t ready to announce a release date, it's clear that this game is poised to be anything but another generic entry in the Steam catalog. The developers are intent on distinguishing Hunger from the pack, and their vision is compelling.

Two aspects of Hunger immediately caught my attention: its visual aesthetic and its stunning graphics. Game director Maximilian Rea described the game's look as "Renaissance gothic," a fitting label for the blend of first-generation firearms and brutal melee weapons set amidst filthy, lived-in towns and majestic castles. The use of Unreal Engine 5 brings the foliage, lighting, and texture detail to life in breathtaking fashion, making it one of the most impressive applications of the engine I've seen.
While I wasn't able to go hands-on with the game yet, the developers shared their ambitious goals for Hunger. They aim to combine the simplicity of ARC Raiders with the depth of Escape From Tarkov. The game starts in the Outer Ramparts, a social hub within the Chateau where players and NPCs mingle freely. Here, you can switch to third-person perspective, shop with the eccentric Piro, manage your inventory with Louis the Stashmaster, or embark on expeditions led by the seasoned Reynauld.
The initial Early Access release will feature three expansive maps—Jacques Bridge, Sombre Forest, and Sarlat Farm—each with a square kilometer of terrain and a dungeon beneath. Expect diverse weather conditions from noon to sunset, with more dynamic elements planned post-launch. The game aims to offer 50-60 hours of content, unlocking the Cauldron area where players can choose from six professions, balancing gathering and crafting roles.
The narrative of Hunger unfolds through a backdrop of civil conflict triggered by the devastating bacteria known as The End. Players can discover and extract lore items like Missives and Maps, which range from Common to Legendary. Extracting with a Missive grants XP and contributes to piecing together the game's story, which is also conveyed through NPC interactions.
The undead in Hunger vary in abilities, encouraging strategic choices between silent melee combat and noisy gunfire. For example, the Bloater explodes into a cloud of poisonous gas, while the Shambler inflicts bleed damage. With 33 weapons available, from daggers to primitive machine guns, players can utilize exotic ammo for enhanced effects. Dedicated PvP modes are also included, alongside a Mastery Tree system with four trees—Physiology, Survival, Martial, and Cunning—offering diverse progression paths.

Hunger supports solo and duo play, ensuring that smaller groups can still thrive and progress efficiently. Cosmetics are unlocked through progression, enhancing every weapon and bag. Importantly, Hunger will not be free-to-play, avoiding pay-to-win mechanics and eschewing battle passes. A "Support the Developers" edition will offer additional cosmetics at a higher price point than the standard $30 edition.
Sessions in Hunger are designed to last from 30-35 minutes, making it easy to enjoy a fulfilling experience without feeling tied to a live-service game. Every action contributes to XP gains, ensuring no session feels wasted. Maximilian Rea emphasized that even an hour of play should feel like meaningful progress for your character.
While Hunger is still some time away, the innovative approach by the team behind Hell Let Loose promises a unique and engaging experience. Stay tuned to IGN for more updates as development continues.
