M3GAN 2.0 Box Office Disappoints, Blumhouse Chief Reflects
Blumhouse head Jason Blum has addressed the disappointing box office performance of M3GAN 2.0, acknowledging several missteps in its release strategy.
M3GAN 2.0 earned $10.2 million domestically and only $6.958 million internationally during its opening weekend. These figures suggest the breakout success of the original M3GAN, released in December 2022, which ultimately grossed $180 million worldwide, may have been a unique phenomenon.
IGN's M3GAN 2.0 review awarded the film a score of 6/10, stating: "M3GAN 2.0 trades horror for sci-fi and action with mixed success. However, M3GAN's sharp wit and killer dance moves remain the highlight, overshadowing the shift in genre."
So, what led to M3GAN 2.0's significant underperformance? Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse Productions, shared his initial analysis on the latest episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast.
"It's been a painful weekend, and I've been overanalyzing everything," Blum confessed during the 20-minute discussion. "If Blumhouse is experiencing a downturn, I want to be the one to explain it, not others."
Blum revealed that just ten weeks before release, tracking suggested an opening weekend of $45 million for M3GAN 2.0. "We were seriously discussing the possibility of this smaller film outperforming 'F1,'" he said. However, these projections quickly declined. Eight weeks out, the forecast dropped to $40 million; at six weeks, it was $35 million; and by four weeks, it was down to $30 million. "The first film opened to $32 million," Blum noted. "We anticipated a drop of around 20%, so $30 million seemed reasonable. International projections followed a similar pattern."
He continued: "Just five days before opening, the projection fell from $30 million to $20 million. That was on Monday, and I was deeply concerned. By Thursday, we were looking at maybe $19 million, and I was in a downward spiral. Waking up on Monday morning to a final figure of $10 million was devastating."

Blum then delved into the specifics of the opening weekend failure.
"We mistakenly viewed M3GAN as invincible, like Superman," he admitted. "We thought we could drastically alter her character—change genres, release her in the summer, modify her appearance, or even turn her from a villain into a hero. We fundamentally overestimated the nature of the audience's connection to her."
"Our decision to switch genres backfired. The audience was not prepared for that change. They simply wanted more of the M3GAN they already knew and loved."
This refers to M3GAN 2.0's shift from a thriller-horror, like the first film, toward an action-comedy—a move that clearly did not resonate.
"Secondly, we believed the film could succeed with a summer release," Blum added. "We thought we were elevating a modest horror movie into a major summer tentpole."
Once again, this change in release strategy proved unsuccessful.
"When you change a film's genre, the execution must be flawless," Blum stated. "We did actually receive a higher CinemaScore for this M3GAN compared to the last one. Those who saw it largely enjoyed it. However, critical reception was more mixed and slightly less favorable than for the first film."
Blum also suggested that the tight production schedule, which gave director Gerard Johnstone less time to complete the sequel for its summer release compared to the original, was a contributing factor.
"We simply got overexcited about M3GAN's potential, and in the end, the strategy failed," Blum concluded. "That's the reality of what happened."

Looking ahead, Blum clarified that he is not facing an existential crisis about Blumhouse or the movie industry as a whole. However, he confirmed the company is reevaluating its upcoming film slate and expressed his view that the current market is oversaturated with horror content.
"We're accustomed to a market that could support 12 to 15 horror films a year, where many would achieve modest success," he remarked. "I believe that market has shrunk. It might return, but for now, the audience's capacity for horror content seems limited."
Another potential response is to focus on making Blumhouse films into more significant theatrical events to stand out, which may involve increasing budgets. Blum cited the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's sequel as an example of this approach.
"I'm not having an existential crisis," he reiterated. "But you can't ignore the signals. We need to scrutinize our slate. Did we produce too many films this year? Should every one of our releases be a major theatrical event? That's a different criteria than we used a year ago. If we continued with the old approach without adapting, then a crisis would be warranted, as it would likely put us out of business."
