Metal Gear Pioneered a Storytelling Concept in Stealth Games

This year marks the 37th anniversary of Metal Gear, and its creator, Hideo Kojima, has taken to social media to reflect on the game's legacy and the evolution of the gaming industry.
Hideo Kojima Reflects on Metal Gear's 37th Anniversary
The Radio Transceiver: A Groundbreaking Storytelling Tool
July 13th marked the anniversary of the original Metal Gear, released on the MSX2 in 1987. Kojima, in a series of tweets, highlighted the game's innovative use of the in-game radio transceiver as a key storytelling element. While often praised for its stealth mechanics, Kojima believes the transceiver's impact is often underestimated. Used by Solid Snake to communicate with others, it provided crucial information, including boss identities, character betrayals, and even team member deaths. Beyond plot points, Kojima noted its ability to guide players and explain game mechanics.
"Metal Gear was packed with things ahead of its time, but the biggest invention was the radio transceiver in the storytelling," Kojima tweeted. The real-time interaction allowed the narrative to dynamically respond to player actions, creating a more immersive experience. He explained that the transceiver ensured player engagement even during events they didn't directly witness. "The game moves along with the player, so when drama happens without the player's knowledge, their feelings get detached. But with the transceiver, the player's current situation can be depicted while other characters' stories are foreshadowed in parallel." Kojima expressed pride in the transceiver's lasting impact, noting its influence on modern shooter games.
Hideo Kojima's Enduring Passion for Creation
Kojima, now 60, also reflected on aging and its influence on his work. He acknowledged the physical challenges but emphasized the value of accumulated knowledge, experience, and wisdom in anticipating future societal trends and project outcomes. He believes that experience refines the entire creative process, from planning and experimentation to development, production, and release.

Kojima is renowned for his cinematic storytelling in video games, often compared to a film auteur. Beyond cameos with actors like Timothée Chalamet and Hunter Schafer, he’s busy at Kojima Productions, collaborating with Jordan Peele on project OD and preparing for the next Death Stranding installment, soon to be adapted into a live-action movie by A24.

Looking ahead, Kojima remains optimistic about game development's future, believing that technological advancements will continuously unlock new creative possibilities. "With the constant evolution of technology in the game industry, we can do things impossible three decades ago. By borrowing the help of technology, 'creation' has become easier and more convenient. As long as I do not lose my passion for 'creation,' I believe I can keep going," he concluded.
